FRIENDS OF CHARTRES
Chichesters French Twinning Association
Schools Art Competition

In 2009, as part of the 50th Anniversary celebrations, Friends of Chartres held, in conjunction with Pallant House Gallery, a Schools’ Art Competition with the theme of 'mosaic', inspired by the unique 'Picassiette House' in Chartres.
Following the success of the first competition, it has become an annual event organised jointly by the Friends of Chartres and Pallant House Gallery, and the fourth completion will launch in October 2012.
The 2010/11 school year competition was using the medium of stained glass, taking as inspiration the beautiful windows in Chartres and Chichester Cathedrals. For the first time a school from Chartres (l’ecole du Grand Jardin) took part, as well as eight schools from Chichester or nearby. The exhibition of the schools’ entries from Pallant House Gallery was taken to Chartres by the Friends of Chartres and displayed there in the Hotel du Ville (Town Hall) during October 2011.
The third competition (2011/12 school year) was using the medium of textiles, taking John Piper’s magnificent tapestry behind the main altar in Chichester Cathedral as inspiration. This time eleven local schools took part and again the same school from Chartres. The exhibition of the schools’ entries from Pallant House Gallery was displayed in the Hotel du Ville in Chartres during September and October 2012.
Further information about past competitions can be found in our magazine Citylink, especially Dec 2010, June, Sep and Dec 2011 and June 2012.
The competition for 2012/13 was launched on 18th October 2012 and the theme is ‘A Tale of Twinned Cities Chapter 3 – Printmaking’. Artist Helen Brown from bipArt gave a demonstration and examples of print making can be seen on the bipArt website: http://www.bip-art.co.uk/
